Description: The article reconstructs Susan Leigh Star’s conceptual work on the notion of ‘boundary objects’. It traces the emergence of the concept, beginning with her PhD thesis and its publication as in 1989. ‘Boundary objects’ attempt to represent the distributed, multifold nature of scientific work and its mediations between different ‘social worlds’. Being addressed to several ‘communities of practice’, the term responded to questions from Distributed Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science, Workplace Studies and Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and microhistorical approaches inside the growing Science and Technology Studies. Yet the interdisciplinary character and interpretive flexibility of Star’s invention has rarely been noticed as a conceptual tool for media theory. I therefore propose to reconsider Star’s ‘Durkheim test’ for sociotechnical media practices.

Description: For over 40 years the Institute for Comparative Literature at the University of Innsbruck has focused in its teaching and research work on taking stock of the concept of intermediality and the complex relations that exist between literature and other art forms such as painting, architecture, dance, music, photography, film, performance art and digital art. Students of comparative literature studying in Innsbruck have gained insights into this field through the diverse and innovative lectures held by Klaus Zerinschek, to whom this anthology is dedicated. All of the articles were written by scholars of comparative literature or philologists active in the field of comparative literature. They address theoretical concepts of intermediality, use such concepts to carry out practical analyses of concrete artistic phenomena, or incorporate concepts of intermediality into their own artistic work. This broad range of approaches to intermediality from the perspective of comparative literature studies...

Description: We have long moved on from a mere information age to the era of big data. Here, databases represent both the enormous potential for gaining knowledge of data collection and the alarming information excesses of digital culture. Furthermore, the term refers to concrete technologies and processes of gathering and accessing digital information. Media theory has to locate databases in between these very different conceptions. Marcus Burkhardt retraces the history of databases and asks how technical procedures of processing digital information determine what can be found how in databases and what knowledge can be gained through them.

Description: Nowadays, media determine the daily routine of schools. But what are media? How has media been fought about over the centuries? This volume offers the foundations for a qualified confrontation with questions of media reflection and the use of media in school praxis. A historical overview shows the structures of the debates around the possibilities and dangers of the use of media, and thus serves to make the debate more objective. The comprehensible and competent representation of the central concepts, developments and discoveries of media theory make this book essential reading for students in education and student teachers from diverse subject areas.

Description: What are science studies for? The article faces this question by arguing, 1. that they can help to improve literary criticism, and 2. that such an improved criticism allows to recognize how knowledge, whether scientific or not, is linked with history and culture respectively. Both aspects are demonstrated by some remarks on Theodor Fontane's most famous novel,, and its allusions to the then newly discovered microbes on the one hand as well as to mediumistic phaenomena on the other hand.

Description: Susan Leigh Star's (1954-2010) research encompasses aspects of infrastructural and social theory, knowledge ecologies, feminism and theories of marginality. For the first time, this volume introduces the American science and technology sociologist's most important writings in German. Her texts on border objects, marginality, infrastructures and standards are commented upon by academics and scientists in these fields, and analyzed for their relevance to media studies. With commentaries by Geoffrey C. Bowker, Cora Bender, Ulrike Bergermann, Monika Dommann, Christine Hanke, Bernhard Nett, Jörg Potthast, Gabriele Schabacher, Cornelius Schubert, Erhard Schüttpelz and Jörg Strübing.

Description: High frequency trading, Google ranking, filter bubble – just three topical examples of the power of algorithms. This title presents a collection of contributions that deal with the historical emergence and wide distribution of algorithms that can be found in various aspects of social life today. They focus on the correlations between algorithmic and non-algorithmic actors and their significance for our daily lives and our social relationships and follow up on the mechanisms with which algorithms – products of a specific global access – frame reality while organizing the way how humans thinks about society. The contributions include case studies on social media, advertising and evaluation but also on mobile safety infrastructures, such as drones.
