Description: The correlation between interfacial width and adhesion, as expressed by the fracture toughness of the interface, in glassy polymers is investigated. The interfacial width is measured accurately by neutron reflectivity, and the fracture toughness of the interfaces is determined from a double cantilever beam test. Two experimental situations are considered:  the case of an interface between two immiscible polymers, polystyrene (PS) and poly(p-methylstyrene) (PpMS), and the case of a PS−PS interface, where the interfacial width and the fracture toughness are measured for different interdiffusion times. In both cases, a direct correlation between the fracture toughness and the interfacial width is found. After an initial rapid increase in toughness due presumably to chain-end diffusion, most of the subsequent increase in toughness occurs over a relatively narrow range of interfacial widths between 9 and 12 nm. The fracture toughness stays constant with further interdiffusion. The...

Description: The fracture toughness G c of interfaces between several styrene-based homopolymers was investigated by the asymmetric double cantilever beam method while the width of the same interfaces a i was investigated in parallel by neutron reflectivity. G c was found to be a direct function of a i provided that the molecular weights of the homopolymers were sufficiently high. The dependence of G c on a i could be divided in three regimes:  a low toughness regime for a i 6 nm, an intermediate regime for 6 nm a i 11 nm where G c increased steeply with a i and a plateau regime for a i 11 nm where G c was independent of a i. A molecular analysis of the transition from regime I to II showed that the average interpenetration distance of the homopolymers needed to activate the plastic deformation mechanisms was much less than the average distance between entanglement points in the bulk polymers. This result can be explained by the fact that a significant portion of the load-bearing...

Description: IN GERMAN: Der Aufsatz stellt das Kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungskolleg »Medienumbrüche« (FK 615) der Universität Siegen vor. Jahrhundert bestimmen lassen. // IN ENGLISH: This essay is introducing the centre of cultural research »Media Upheavals« (FK 615) at the University of Siegen. The FK 615 examines the prerequisites and structures of the media upheavals at the beginning of the 20th century and in the crossover to the 21st century. A guiding premise of the investigation is the observation that media upheavals suppose comprehensive, discontinuous, structural changes within media history. From a chronological perspective, the evolutionary processes of media history have again and again gone through the phases of an abrupt crossover into a hitherto unknown quality in terms of media development. The target of the centre for cultural research is the contrastive comparison of the two structurally authoritative media upheavals of the 20th century, which can be defined as a breakthrough to the »analogous« media at the beginning of the 20th, and as a »digital« breakthrough at the turn of the 21st century.
