Description: As long as scientists discuss scientific problems and communicate with each other, scholarly communication is an essential part of scientific activities. In the very ancient time the scholarly communication was only an oral tradition, a face to face communication. Later on, the written form of communication has taken place. Since the invention of movable printing types by Gutenberg the scholarly communication was preferable in written and printed form. Since 15 years the revolution has taken place with the digital information, which is now available for scholarly communication. There was a paradigm shift from the printed and oral tradition to a new digital electronic science communication. In the future the traditional printed book information for scientific communication will be replaced by problem solving portals with all electronic and digital tools.

Description: It has become unimaginable to provide information - particularly scientific information - without e-books. They have become part of today's combination of media, which includes printed books and journals, e-journals, e-books, and databases. When e-books first appeared on the market, librarians very quickly formulated their key requirements. The most important requirement is functionality: it must be possible to look through a book chapter by chapter, and also to get a quick overview of a comprehensive monograph. Usage arrangements, including concurrent usage and use for interlibrary loans, are also important. The use of uniform technical standards increases the acceptance of e-books.

Description: Acknowledgement of scientific achievements was and is essentially achieved through the citation of a publication. Increasingly, however, it is no longer just the publication itself that plays an important role, but also the degree of attention that a scientist achieves with this very publication. Thus, the importance of strategic behavior in science is progressing and an awareness mentality is spreading. In this paper, the causes and backgrounds of this development are discussed, identifying the use of reductionist, quantitative systems in science management and research funding, the loss of critical judgment and technocratic dominance, quantitative assessments used for decision making, altmetrics and the like as alternative views, the use of perception scores in reference databases and universities as well as ambitions of journals as main drivers. Besides, different forms of strategic behavior in science and the resulting consequences and impacts are being highlighted.

Description: Byline: Rafael Ball (1) The titles of scientific articles have a special significance. We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles. Description: For millennia, ever since the advent of writing, the mediation of complex knowledge has been restricted to the written transfer of information through linear text. Academic communication primarily uses linear text, even for mathematical and scientific matters. For around 20 years, the progressive digitisation of academia has enabled the visualisation of complex contexts and their propagation on a massive scale without being bound to linear text. The externalisation of knowledge and its transfer from one person to another can now also take place with the aid of alternative techniques. This is virtually tantamount to a revolution in academic communication. Particularly for libraries, however, this poses an enormous challenge as, for the last 2,000 years, they have been geared towards storing and disseminating academic results almost exclusively as textual forms

Description: Ein Buch aus der Reihe Wissen & Leben, herausgegeben von Wulf Bertram, Leben im neuen Takt - Unsere Welt ist digital geworden.
